New Albertville head football coach Joel Poole saw the first commitment of his Aggie career when senior offensive lineman Zach Underwood gave his pledge to Samford on Sunday.

“We’re glad that he made the decision,” Poole said. “That’s something that won’t be weighing on his mind during football season.

“We’re proud of anybody who can get a scholarship, so we’re proud of Zach. He’s a good kid, he’s worked hard and he deserved it.”

Poole, who coaches the offensive linemen, moved Underwood from center to guard in Albertville’s new spread attack.

“He might actually play a little center this year too,” Poole said. “He’s still doing some of the things he did before.”

Underwood was honorable mention Class 5A, All-Region 7 and honorable mention All-Marshall County in 2008.

Underwood is No. 46 on Alabama’s Most Wanted, a ranking of the state’s top 50 football prospects published by The Tuscaloosa News.

“Zach’s a great technician of the game, plus he is like having a coach on the field,” Poole said.

“He can help the other kids and help us get in the right offensive blocking schemes for the defense we’re facing.

“He’s very valuable on the field during the game.”

AHS opens the season Aug. 28 against Ashville.
