Junior running back Tyree Roberts has been selected The Reporter’s first Player of the Week for the 2009 high school football season.

Roberts rushed 18 times for 163 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 28 and 50 yards in Albertville’s 41-7 victory over Ashville in its first game under new head coach Joel Poole.

“My line got a good block out there and they really helped me to get those big runs, and I love them for it, and I thank them for it too,” Roberts said.

His 28-yard scoring run gave the Aggies a 14-0 cushion early in the second quarter.

Roberts collected his second TD on a 50-yard dash with 9:33 left in the third period.

“The coaches were telling me at halftime to start picking up my feet because I kept tripping over my feet,” Roberts said.

“They said, ‘Pick up your feet,’ and then the one time I did, I broke it for a long (50-yard touchdown) run.”

Other top performances from week one were:

» Albertville quarterback Michael Reeves threw a 44-yard TD pass to Dareon Thompson and rushed 33 yards for a score against Ashville.

Addison Powell contributed a sack and a 2-yard scoring run.

Austin Smith had an interception, Trent Kuehnert recovered a lateral and Zack Harry recovered a muffed punt.

Powell was pleased with the Aggies’ performance.

“Everybody came out and played with so much heart,” Powell said.

“When things went bad on the offensive side, the defensive side picked it up. And when things went bad on the defensive side, the offense picked it up. We’ve just got each other’s back, and we really came together as a team tonight.”

Powell couldn’t recall his last offensive touchdown before Friday night.

“I was following my lead blocker, Zack Harry, and Zach Underwood did a great job of just blowing his man right off the line, and we came right up there,” he said.

“Harry hit the inside backer and the hole kind of closed up, and I made one move to the left and there it was, wide open. So, that’s all on the blockers right there. A great job.”

» Josh Walker, of Douglas, ran 15 times for 137 yards and a 3-yard TD and caught a 6-yard scoring pass from Kyle Buchanan in a 32-14 triumph over Brindlee Mountain.

Jonathan Tapp rushed 11 times for 69 yards and three touchdowns on runs of 7, 14 and 9 yards. He also made a tackle for a 5-yard loss and returned an interception 43 yards.

Braedy McCoy and Buchanan each made an interception for DHS.

» Rodriqueke Faulks gained 117 yards on 12 carries and scored on a 46-yard scamper in Guntersville’s 21-13 win over Boaz.

Chris Daniel completed 12 of 18 passes for 138 yards and scored on a 1-yard run.

Corey Cahill caught seven passes for 80 yards and ran 3 yards for a touchdown.

Mason Biddle’s interception stopped a late Boaz scoring threat.

Jake Lawson returned an interception 60 yards for the Wildcats.

» Drew Phillips, of Boaz, rushed 37 times for 266 yards and touchdowns of 30 and 28 yards in a 21-13 setback to Guntersville.

Collin Langley’s interception in the end zone stopped a Guntersville threat.

Tyler Martin recovered a fumble for Boaz.

» Dustyn Cooper ran for 63 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 28-yard run in Geraldine’s 27-18 setback to Sylvania.

Pee caught four passes for 90 yards and rushed six times for 66 yards and a 32-yard TD. He also kicked a 28-yard field goal.

Dylan Kelley had kickoff returns of 38 and 55 yards and scored on a 3-yard run.

Tanner Greer had a fumble recovery for the Lions.
